Discord 'Your Message Could Not Be Delivered': Blocked or Settings?
Published 10 October 2026
Short answer
Discord shows 'Your message could not be delivered' when you share no server with the person, when their DM settings don't allow your message, or when they've blocked you. The error looks the same for all of these.
Common causes of the error
- You no longer share a server and aren't friends.
- They turned off DMs from server members.
- Their friend-request or message settings exclude you.
- They blocked you.
Friend requests and calls
Discord lets people limit friend requests to friends of friends or server members. A failed request isn't proof of a block.
What you can't conclude
Discord doesn't notify blocked users and uses the same generic error for privacy settings, so the error alone can't confirm a block.
Frequently asked questions
Can I still see their messages in a shared server if blocked?
Messages from blocked users are usually hidden behind a 'blocked message' placeholder for the person who blocked, not necessarily for you.
