What Does One Tick Mean on WhatsApp? (And Does It Mean You're Blocked?)
Published 10 October 2026
Short answer
One gray tick means your message left your phone and reached WhatsApp's servers, but has not been delivered to the other person's phone yet. It can happen when you're blocked, but it far more often means their phone is off, offline or out of battery.
WhatsApp tick meanings at a glance
WhatsApp shows small check marks beside every message you send:
- One gray tick — sent, not yet delivered.
- Two gray ticks — delivered to their phone.
- Two blue ticks — read (only shown if both of you have read receipts on).
- A clock icon — your own phone hasn't sent it yet, usually because you're offline.
Common reasons a message stays on one tick
Delivery waits until the recipient's phone connects to the internet with WhatsApp working. Typical causes:
- Their phone is switched off, out of battery or in airplane mode.
- They have no mobile data or Wi-Fi, for example while travelling.
- Battery-saving settings stop WhatsApp running in the background.
- They uninstalled WhatsApp, changed phones or changed number.
- They blocked you — messages from a blocked contact are never delivered.
How long can one tick last?
Minutes to hours is very normal. If a message stays on one tick for several days while other signs also change, a block becomes one possible explanation — but a lost or broken phone looks exactly the same.
Does one tick mean someone blocked you?
Not on its own. WhatsApp never tells you that you were blocked, and the one-tick pattern is identical for an offline phone. It becomes more meaningful only alongside other changes, such as calls that never ring and a profile photo that stopped updating — and even then it isn't proof.
What not to do
Don't send repeated test messages or calls, and don't use apps that claim to reveal blocks — WhatsApp offers no such feature, and those tools often ask for account access. If someone has chosen to limit contact, it's kindest to respect that.
Frequently asked questions
Can one tick turn into two later?
Yes. When their phone reconnects, the message is delivered and the second tick appears.
If I'm blocked, will my old messages show one tick?
Messages sent before a block keep their previous ticks. Only messages sent after the block stay on one tick.
Why do I see two ticks but never blue?
The message was delivered. They either haven't opened it yet or have turned read receipts off.
