Messenger Message Sent but Not Delivered: What It Means

Published 10 October 2026

Short answer

A message that shows as sent but not delivered hasn't reached the person's Messenger app yet. Common causes are message requests they haven't accepted, being offline, or an inactive account. Blocking is one possible reason, not the only one.

Messenger delivery icons explained

  • Empty circle — sending.
  • Circle with a tick — sent.
  • Filled circle with a tick — delivered.
  • Their tiny profile photo — seen.

Why a message stays on 'sent'

  • You're not friends and the chat is waiting in their message requests.
  • They haven't opened Messenger or have no connection.
  • They deactivated Messenger or their Facebook account.
  • They ignored or restricted the chat — this hides activity without blocking.
  • They blocked your messages.

The strongest sign: a notice in the chat

Sometimes Messenger replaces the message box with a notice such as 'You can't reply to this conversation'. That's the clearest sign Messenger gives, but similar notices appear for deactivated or restricted accounts.

Frequently asked questions

Will my message deliver if they unblock me?

Messages sent while blocked are generally not delivered later. Only new messages after unblocking arrive.

Does 'Restrict' stop delivery?

No. Restricted chats move out of their inbox, but they aren't a block.
