What you'll learn

  • Read the delivery error
  • Check shared servers
  • Check friend status
  • Consider account changes
  • Use the Discord checker

How it works

Discord's "Your message could not be delivered" has several causes, of which blocking is only one.

The video shows one creator's approach. Where it suggests a sign "confirms" a block, read the limitations below — most signs have other explanations.

Before you start

  • A Discord account

Step by step

  1. Read the delivery error

Discord shows it when you're blocked, when you share no server, or when they disabled DMs from server members.

  2. Check shared servers

If one of you left the only shared server, DMs may stop working.

  3. Check friend status

A removed friend or a declined request is not the same as a block.

  4. Consider account changes

Deleted accounts appear as "Deleted User".

  5. Use the Discord checker

    Weigh your observations together.

Android, iPhone and desktop

Desktop
Right-click a message to react; DM errors come from the Clyde system message.
Android & iPhone
Long-press a message to react; failed reactions may show "Reaction blocked".

Signs you may notice — and what they prove

  • My DMs fail with a 'could not be delivered' message

Consistent with a block, but has other causes

Discord shows this when blocked, but also when you share no server, aren't friends, or their DM settings exclude you.

  • I can't add them as a friend or call them

    Often just a privacy setting

Friend request settings can block requests from non-mutuals without any block.

  • Their profile or our shared server context changed

    Often just a privacy setting

They may have left the server, been removed, or changed per-server privacy.

Important

  • Discord's relationship data would show who you blocked, not who blocked you.

Common mistakes and troubleshooting

Can't send a friend request
They may have limited who can add them, not necessarily blocked you.

What this does not prove

  • None of these signs proves a block on its own. Only a notice shown by the platform itself is strong evidence.

Frequently asked questions

Does a reaction failing mean a block?

Often in shared servers, but server permissions can also block reactions.
