Facebook Blocked vs Deactivated: How to Tell the Difference
Published 10 October 2026
Short answer
If someone deactivates, their profile disappears for everyone. If they block you, it disappears only for you. You usually can't be sure which from your account alone, but a few clues help.
Clues that point to deactivation
- Their name appears as 'Facebook User' in old Messenger threads.
- Their posts and comments are gone from mutual friends' pages too.
- Tags of them in old photos no longer link to a profile.
Clues that point to a block
- 'This content isn't available right now' on their profile link, while mutual friends mention seeing new activity.
- They disappear from your search but not from others'.
- You can't tag or message them, but they still appear active elsewhere.
Unfriending and privacy changes look similar
After being unfriended you can usually still find the profile and see public content. Tighter privacy settings or a custom audience can hide almost everything. Neither is a block.
What you can't conclude
Facebook doesn't notify blocked people, and none of these clues is certain. Please don't create new accounts to look at someone's profile — it can breach Facebook's terms.
Frequently asked questions
Does blocking on Facebook also block Messenger?
Blocking a profile on Facebook also blocks Messenger, but someone can block only your messages in Messenger while you still see their profile.
Can I see a deactivated profile?
No. Deactivated profiles are hidden from everyone until the person reactivates.
