What you'll learn
- Look at the circle icons
- Read any banner in the chat
- Check the name and photo
- Know about restriction
- Use the Messenger checker
How it works
Messenger and Facebook are linked but separate: someone can block you on Messenger only, or on Facebook entirely.
The video shows one creator's approach. Where it suggests a sign "confirms" a block, read the limitations below — most signs have other explanations.
Before you start
- Messenger app or messenger.com
Step by step
Look at the circle icons
An empty circle means sending, a ticked outline means sent, a filled tick means delivered, and their small photo means seen.
Read any banner in the chat
Messages such as "You can't reply to this conversation" can follow a block, a deactivated account, or a restriction.
Check the name and photo
"Facebook User" with a gray image usually points to a deactivated or deleted account.
Know about restriction
If someone restricts you, your messages go to their requests folder and you see no change at all.
Use the Messenger checker
Separate Messenger signs from Facebook profile signs for a clearer picture.
Android, iPhone and desktop
- Android & iPhone
- Delivery circles appear under your last message.
- Desktop
- On messenger.com or facebook.com/messages, hover over a message to see its delivery status.
Signs you may notice — and what they prove
Messenger shows a notice that I can't reply or message this person
Shown by the platform itself
Messenger displays notices such as 'You can't reply to this conversation' in some situations. This is stronger evidence, though it can also appear for deactivated or restricted accounts.
My messages appear sent but never delivered
Consistent with a block, but has other causes
Undelivered messages can follow a block, but also message requests that were never accepted or a deactivated Messenger account.
Calls do not appear to go through
Consistent with a block, but has other causes
Calls may fail after a block or because of connectivity, notification settings, or an inactive account.
Their photo in our conversation turned into a blank avatar
Often just a privacy setting
A blank avatar often follows deactivation or deletion as well as blocking.
Important
- Don't message from other accounts to test a block — it can be against Meta's rules.
Common mistakes and troubleshooting
- Messages stay on "sent"
- They may not have opened the app, or your message may be in their requests folder.
What this does not prove
- None of these signs proves a block on its own. Only a notice shown by the platform itself is strong evidence.
- Business messaging tools cannot read personal inboxes or reveal personal blocks.
