What you'll learn

  • Search by name, not just username
  • Read what the profile shows
  • Note "User not found"
  • Check your DM thread
  • Use the Instagram checker

How it works

Instagram profiles change visibility often: usernames change, accounts go private, and people take breaks.

The video shows one creator's approach. Where it suggests a sign "confirms" a block, read the limitations below — most signs have other explanations.

Before you start

  • An Instagram account

Step by step

  1. Search by name, not just username

A changed username makes old links and @mentions break. Try their display name.

  2. Read what the profile shows

"No posts yet" with a follower count of zero can follow a block — or an emptied account.

  3. Note "User not found"

This commonly means deactivation, deletion or a username change.

  4. Check your DM thread

If the thread remains but their name is grayed, the account may be deactivated.

  5. Use the Instagram checker

Combine what you saw for a balanced explanation.

Android, iPhone and desktop

Android & iPhone
Search is the magnifying-glass tab; profiles open from your DM list by tapping the name at the top.
Desktop
Visit instagram.com/username directly — "Sorry, this page isn't available" has the same meaning as "User not found" in the app.

Signs you may notice — and what they prove

  • The profile no longer appears in search

Consistent with a block, but has other causes

Blocked profiles usually don't appear in your search. Username changes and deactivation cause the same thing.

  • The profile opens but shows 'No posts yet' or no content

Consistent with a block, but has other causes

When blocked you may see a profile with a post count but no grid. Archived or deleted posts can also empty a grid.

  • A profile link says 'Sorry, this page isn't available'

Consistent with a block, but has other causes

Shown for blocks, but also for changed usernames and deactivated or removed accounts.

  • DMs or interactions behave differently than before

    Often just a privacy setting

Restrict, mute and message-control settings change how chats look without any block.

  • The account now says 'This account is private'

    Often just a privacy setting

This means they switched to private or removed you as a follower — not a block.

Important

  • Viewing someone's profile from another account to check on them may break Instagram's terms.

Common mistakes and troubleshooting

Their profile works logged out but not for me
This is more consistent with a block, but is still user-reported, not verified.

What this does not prove

  • None of these signs proves a block on its own. Only a notice shown by the platform itself is strong evidence.
  • Instagram's official API does not offer block information to outside apps.

Frequently asked questions

Will Instagram tell me if I'm blocked?

No. Instagram does not notify the blocked person.
